The Wood Carving Industry of Paete

Ever wondered why most wood carvings from Paete are religious-themed? It’s because the locals of this town started wood carving since the Spanish era. You know how religion flourish during those times.

Paete is known for the wood carving products: statues, religious icons, furniture. Dubbed as the Wood Carving Capital of the Philippines, Paete’s name was believed to be derived from what else? Paet, or chisel, the tool used for carving wood.

This industry lived throughout the years as the skill was passed on from one generation to the next. It has, since then, became a strong industry in Paete. Aside from being a livelihood industry, wood carving served as a trademark of the locals and has been part of the tradition of the Paeteños.
