Biñan: A Tale of a New City

Despite the spate of disaster and calamities that have descended upon this thriving metropolis south of Manila, the air is nonetheless heavy with anticipation. To be sure, there is a palpable sense of inspired urgency in the way its residents go about their usual routines.

Thanks to the recent signing of Republic Act No. 9240 (also known as an Act Converting the Municipality of Biñan into a component city), Biñan is in the cusp of change. It is ready to take its rightful place as an epic center of progress in this side of Laguna.

Marlyn B. Alonte-Naguiat, the youthful and hardworking city mayor of Biñan describes this recent development as a major milestone that will reinvigorate the city and drive its residents into the swing of change and progress. In her message published in the city’s official website, the energetic mayor characterizes the cityhood as an opportunity to turn her long-held vision for her beloved birthplace into a reality.

Alonte also added that her constituents, the enterprising residents of Biñan, have been on the right path all along. “We have already shown our foremost strength in attracting foreign direct investments with the thriving export processing zones and prime industrial estates. It is only a matter of time before Biñan becomes known as the hub of progress in Laguna,” she noted.

Republic Act 9240 was recently signed into law by past President Gloria Arroyo. Authored by Laguna Congressman Dan Fernandez, this new law is regarded by many as a virtual adrenaline shot in the arm as it effectively provides the appropriate template in energizing countryside development as the engine for national progress. As a thriving industrial destination, Biñan has created a niche as one of the country’s major business and investment havens. The Laguna International Industrial Park (LIIP) and Laguna Technopark, Inc. are two of the industrial parks that have contributed favorably in the country’s economy by creating local employment and projecting foreign investment potential. Toshiba, Hitachi Computer, Amkor Anam Precision, IMI, TDK are just among the several multinational companies that have made Biñan their corporate homes.

The cityhood is also expected to bring in an additional P250 million in Biñan’s annual budget, an amount that could spell more possibilities in terms of enhanced services to its growing population. This erstwhile first-class municipality famous for its delicacies like the mouth-watering “puto biñan” and other export-quality products like the “sombrero” will soon be famous for other things as well.

As chief executive of the city government of Biñan, Mayor Alonte-Naguiat is positive that her vision will inspire everybody to make a difference in their own respective spheres. She expects that given the new challenges and opportunities, alongside the problems and difficulties, will only serve to bring out the best in the city.
